The rescue efforts at the crash site of the London-bound Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad has been officially completed. Reports by India Today reveal. The crash, involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, claimed at least 265 lives including former Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP leader Vijay Rupani.

Investigators note the crash occurred less than a minute after takeoff, with the plane reaching only 230 ft before descending and exploding into a medical hostel.

Quoting the Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, “a formal investigation into the Air India flight crash has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).” The Indian government is also constituting a high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the cause of the Air tragedy in detail. The committee will work to strengthen aviation safety and prevent such incidents in the future, Ram Mohan assured.

Speaking to the media in company of Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel after visiting the crash site, Union Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that efforts to save people from the Air India plane crash failed as the temperature rose to extreme levels due to the burning of 1.25 lakh litres of fuel on the aircraft.

Miracle Escape

More details have emerged about the sole survivor of the June 12, 2025 Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad – and it has been described as a near‑miracle escape. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh (also reported as Ramesh Viswashkumar), a 40‑year‑old British national was traveling with his brother, Ajay, who is presumed dead.

Reports by Reuters claim Vishwash Ramesh had a seat swap with his brother that likely saved his life.
Originally booked in 11J, Ramesh switched into 11A, right beside an emergency exit – just minutes before takeoff.

According to Air‑safety experts, being within five rows of an exit increases chances of survival in any air mishap.

Rescue teams and police say Ramesh “jumped out” through the emergency exit after the plane hit the ground, suffering injuries to chest, eyes, feet, along with cuts and bruises from the impact, but no life‑threatening wounds.

In his own words to Reuters from his hospital bed, he recalled: “I woke up – bodies and wreckage were all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.”
Witness video later captured him limping away from the crash site, assisted by medics.

Ramesh disclosed to the media he visited his family in India with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, 45, and was returning to the U.K. when the crash occurred.

In a phone call to his family in Leicester he said: “I have no idea how I exited the plane.”

Apparently, his proximity to the emergency exit occasioned by last-minute seat swap, and rapid decision-making arguably made the difference between life and death.
