LAGOS – “Except governments at all levels embrace mechanised agriculture and invest substantially in same, food security and sufficiency in Nigeria would remain a delusion, further fueling existing high rate of malnutrition, unemployment and insecurity.”
The warning was handed down by Dr. Francis Toromade, Director-General, PremierAgribusiness Academy, at Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria GPAAN end of the year round table lecture event titled: “The Way Forward For Nigeria’s Food Security” held at The Citadel, Ikeja Lagos,
“The consequence of not paying a Farmer would only result in paying more to a Pharma,” “Hence, the urgent need to invest and develop new strategies for food security and sufficiency.” The guest lecturer declared.
Speaking further at the 28th of December, 2024 event, Dr. Francis lamented inadequate government funding and synergy for mechanised agricultural research and training which often result in humongous harvest wastages owing to lack of preservation facilities.
The renowned agricultural economist’s conviction in the 3Fs: Food for Humans, Feed for Animals and Fiber for the Industry as panacea to food security and sufficiency was laid bare through his advocacy for substantial and continuous investment in mechanised farming, sustainable cultivation and integrated crop -livestock systems and improved infrastructure to strengthen the value chain and enhance export potential.
Further highlighting numerous distinct agricultural strengths and opportunities in cash and food crops across the six geopolitical zones, that can contribute immensely to Nigeria’s food security and economy, he urged governments at all levels to build political will required for effective engagement with critical stakeholders and donors, in order to achieve mass food production through modern technology, research, training and adequate funding.
The highlight of Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria 2024 annual lecture event was induction of the guest lecturer, Dr. Francis Toromade, as Fellow of Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria and presentation of award plaque in recognition of his immense contribution to global agricultural development and promotion by the Guild’s president, Mr. Ayo Oyoze Baje.
