French automaker Renault will begin drones production in Ukraine, France Info reported, marking a significant collaboration between the automotive and defense sectors.
Renault will collaborate with a small French defense company to equip production lines in Ukrainian, with the drones set to serve both the Ukrainian and French military forces.
The French Defense Ministry refused to elaborate on Defense Minister’s June 6 pronouncement that a major French automaker would join forces with a defense SME to launch drone production in Ukraine.
In a statement to Le Monde newspaper, Sébastien Lecornu praised the project as an “unprecedented partnership.”
Production is set to commence”away from the front line”, and assembly will be managed exclusively by Ukrainians, with the French side recognising their expertise in drone development and combat use techniques.
“They are better than us at designing drones and especially at developing the strategies that accompany them,” Lecornu added, claiming that “there is no need” to send French citizens to work on the production line.
The use of drones has been a key component of the ongoing war since the beginning, with both Ukraine and Russia relying on unmanned systems for reconnaissance and attacks. After the unprecedented attacks on Russian strategic aviation by the Ukrainians’ ingenious use of FPV swarms – which achieved results difficult to achieve by classical means – the role of drones in current and future warfare requires a clear direction in the development of modern armies.
Owing to the precarious situation it finds itself in, Ukraine quickly adapted and created the first organizational and combat structures based on the use of drones, while state officials announced that Ukrainian manufacturers had reached the capacity to manufacture over 5 million FPV drones annually.
