In a gathering that blended celebration, service, and shared history, Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission hosted a high-profile dinner in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja on Saturday evening to honour another illustrious alumnus of Air Force Military School (AFMS) Jos, Idi Abbas, following his appointment as Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The event, organised under the auspices of the Air Force Military School (AFMS), Jos Ex-Junior Airmen (Ex-JAM) Association, 1981 Set, brought together an influential cross-section of Nigeria’s military elite, alumni, policymakers, and distinguished guests. It was both a celebration of professional excellence and a reaffirmation of the enduring bonds forged within one of the country’s most respected military institutions.

As President of the 1981 Ex-JAM Set, Ebie played a central role in convening the occasion, underscoring the significance of camaraderie, discipline, and lifelong institutional loyalty. The evening paid tribute not only to Vice Admiral Abbas’s elevation to one of Nigeria’s most strategic defence positions, but also to the collective ethos that has shaped generations of AFMS alumni.

A Celebration of Service and Leadership

The ceremony reflected the trajectory of Vice Admiral Abbas’s career marked by decades of dedication to national security and highlighted the broader importance of continuity and professionalism within Nigeria’s armed forces. Attendees described the gathering as a rare convergence of past and present leadership, united by a shared commitment to national service.

In his remarks, Ebie commended members of the Ex-JAM Association for their coordination and commitment in delivering what many described as a seamless and dignified event. He emphasized that the honour accorded to Vice Admiral Abbas was not only personal, but symbolic of the values instilled by the AFMS Jos: discipline, resilience, and selfless service.

Messages of goodwill and confidence in the new naval chief resonated throughout the evening, with speakers expressing optimism about his capacity to navigate Nigeria’s complex maritime security landscape.

The Host: A Profile in Public Service

Ebie himself represents a distinctive blend of legal expertise, public administration, and policy leadership. A trained lawyer and governance specialist, he previously served as Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State, where he spearheaded reforms aimed at improving educational standards and teacher capacity. He later held the influential position of Secretary to the Delta State Government, coordinating policy implementation and crisis response mechanisms, including during the vicious COVID-19 pandemic and periods of environmental vulnerability.

Beyond public office, Ebie has built a career in private legal practice and oil and gas consultancy, advising on regulatory frameworks and development strategy in Nigeria’s energy sector. His appointment in November 2023 as Chairman of the NDDC signaled a federal push toward institutional reform and strategic development in the Niger Delta, a region critical to Nigeria’s economic prosperity and stability.

Under his leadership, the Commission has prioritised governance transparency, long-term planning through the Regional Development Master Plan, and enhanced stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at restoring credibility and accelerating development outcomes in the oil-rich but historically underserved region.

Shared Values and Purpose

Saturday’s event ultimately transcended ceremony. It served as a reminder of the role that elite training institutions like the Air Force Military School, Jos, continue to play in shaping Nigeria’s leadership across sectors – military, civil, and political.

For Ebie, whose career has consistently intersected with public service and institutional development, the evening reflected a broader philosophy: that leadership is both individual achievement and collective responsibility.

As Vice Admiral Abbas assumes command of the Nigerian Navy at a time of evolving security challenges, the strong show of solidarity from peers and EX-JAM Association alumni underscored a national expectation – one rooted in leadership, trust, shared history, and the enduring call to serve. After all, Air Force Military School (AFMS), Jos remains an enviable military institution where future leaders are trained.
